Redesigning and Documenting Vehicle Tracking Process

The Issue

A small towing service towed vehicles for three governmental entities, each of which had different towing and storage charges. The company tracked the towed vehicles and associated charges manually, which resulted in missed or uncollected charges, and incomplete information on stored vehicles.

The Solution

We studied existing records, and interviewed the owner to understand the various towing and storage charges. Then we designed a more efficient process for tracking towed vehicles, and calculating associated towing and storage charges by governmental entity. This computer-based system included error control devices to ensure employees entered complete information for each vehicle.

The Result

The company was able to reduce dramatically the challenge of keeping the various towing and storage charges straight. In addition, the new vehicle tracking system improved the company's competitive edge and ability to bid on other towing contracts.
