Code of Ethics

© 2002 International Society for Performance Improvement

ISPI's Code of Ethics and Standards are intended to promote ethical practice in the profession of human performance technology. The objective of the work of a professional is to:

(a) Provide organizations and/or individuals with the skills, knowledge, abilities, and/or attitude necessary to create opportunities for achieving desired and/or required individual, organizational, and societal results,

(b) Assist in the generation of new and valid knowledge that will lead to the attainment of results meeting the performance criteria demanded by individuals, organizations, and society,

(c) Acquire the knowledge through systematic research methods without jeopardizing the success of my client, my client’s clients, or society, and

(d) Produce the results required by the client. [1]

[1] Paraphrased from the Preliminary Code of Professional Conduct, a section in the article, A Scientific Dialogue: A Performance Accomplishment Code of Professional Conduct by Ryan Watkins, Doug Leigh, and Roger Kaufman. Reprinted with permission of the authors.

The Code of Ethics is based on the following six principles:

Add Value:

  • Conduct yourself, and manage your projects and their results, in ways that add value for your clients, their customers, and the global environment.

  • Validated Practice:

  • Make use of and promote validated practices in performance technology strategies and standards. In the absence of validated practices relevant to the project goals, ethical practice includes sharing information with the client and using practices that are consistent with an existing body of theory, research, and practice knowledge.

  • Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively with clients and users, functioning as a trustworthy strategic partner.

  • Continuous Improvement:

  • Improve continually your proficiency in the field of performance technology.

  • Integrity:

  • Be honest and truthful in representations to your client, colleagues, and others with whom you may come in contact with while practicing performance technology.

  • Uphold Confidentiality:

  • Maintain client confidentiality, not allowing for any conflict of interest that would benefit yourself or others.
