Case Study:

Launching an Employee

Professional Development Program

The Issue

A small medical practice management company's goals were

  1. To provide professional development opportunities to assist employees in increasing knowledge in their specific disciplines

  2. To comply with regulatory guidelines of ongoing staff training and education

  3. To focus on the characteristics that set the company apart from other medical practice management firms by incorporating them into the learning opportunities offered

  4. To disseminate consistent information to staff regarding positively optimizing patient experience under the care of the practices the client managed

The issue was to develop a cost-effective and rapid method for accomplishing these goals that the company could maintain.

The Solution

BDT designed and administered the employee professional development program for the company. BDT also assisted the company with launching the first phase of the program, which was to provide learning opportunities that complied with regulatory guidelines.

BDT researched the feasibility of designing and maintaining a customized learning management system (LMS) that would fit the company's needs. This option was cost and time prohibitive. The company agreed with BDT's recommendation to license an existing LMS with the ability to track employee compliance, and with the flexibility of using either the LMS' already developed regulatory-compliant training material or of adding customized courses.

BDT collaborated with the analysts and developers at the LMS firm to ensure a smooth rollout of the learning management solution for the medical practice management company. In addition, BDT trained the company's management and the human resources staff on how to track employee progress and completion of assigned courses. BDT also designed customized courses and candidate assessments for addition to the LMS.

The Results

The new employee professional development program demonstrated and measured compliance with regulatory guidelines of ongoing training and education. The program helped employees to see links among learning, their job roles, and their performance. The program also became a recruitment selling point because it demonstrated the company's commitment to providing its staff members with learning and development opportunities that enable them to solve problems, respond to challenges, and improve individual and organizational performance.
